History:
The Boreas Section House was built in 1881, at an elevation of 11,482 feet above sea level. The section house served as a lodging house for section workers along the highest point of the Denver, South Park & Pacific narrow gauge line between Denver and Leadville. This route over the Continental Divide was called the “Highline” extension.
The Section House was restored by the U.S. Forest Service and opened to the public in 1996. During the summer, it serves as a visitor center. November to May, the Section House provides lodging for backcountry skiers.
The Design:
This Section House is modeled from the existing, restored structure that exists today.
